So I managed to put in the tantalum cap backwards as well. Symptoms are the same as detailed in the posts here.
There is a nice little silkscreen on the cap to tell me + versus - but I must have missed it. I wonder if I assumed the tantalum cap was similar to a ceramic with no polarity...
I have swapped the polarity on the tantalum cap and now my σ25 is powering my γ2 happily for more than a few minutes.

I recommend that you replace the tantalum cap anyway. While it may appear to work, it might have been compromised by the reversed polarity.
