PROJECT UPDATE: β24 BI-AMPING

Postby SonusBonum » January 20th, 2016, 3:18 am

Hi there,

I just finished ordering all the parts for the β24 amplifier and the σ22 power supply. That was fairly easy since most of the Mouser numbers were listed. The 'difficult' parts are supplied by AMB. Ti did a marvelous job pairing the input FET's.
I am building six pieces of each. Four β24 and σ22 are going into two solid aluminum milled boxes (like Ayre) and are going to drive my home build ribbons and AE Dipole12's. Here's a link to those speakers:

The remaining two sets are for testing and measuring purposes.
The preliminary setup of the aluminum box is shown blow:

It simply a double amp and power supply that share one input. I keep some space available for any future active filters.

Current thru speaker (1000Hz @ 8ohms @ 1Vp-p input)

Input...? Must be feedback...? Pretty sure it's a nice 1000Hz sinus, see output current.

Current thru R45 and R46... Makes sense...

Crossover issues...?
Although I am pretty sure there are no errors in the BOM, there might be some issues with LIB files of certain "difficult" parts.

Clipping at 10V p-p input...

E-501: It looks like it is behaving as it should.
J-FETS: Got those from Ti.
IRFP's: Found on the web, had to "work" the file to be able to use them.
DN's: same
BZX55C's: Used the intrinsic BZX84C6V2L (for class A).
1N5931B: Used the intrinsic EDZV18B, no idea if they are identical.

Keep in mind that I'm fairly new to LTSpice. Any tips and proven LIB's are much appreciated.

I don't think your simulation is set up properly. The amp is probably not operating in class A. If it was, by definition there shouldn't be any crossover distortion.

@AMB: I guess you're right. Must be one of the imported models. I will recheck them later.

Trashed the old file, started all over... And guess what...? I know every corner of the amp by heart and the sim works...! No X over distortion anymore...!

The output should run in differential mode. No?
