Need advise on input/output gain configuration

Postby defcon8 » November 25th, 2018, 10:08 am

Hi there,

Can somebody advise me which in-/output gain configuration i should pick? I'm using the DCX in a studio environment between my speaker switch and my active monitors.

So:
- "Speaker A" output of my speaker switch unit is connected to input A & B of the DCX. (Main monitors signal)
- "Speaker B" output of my speaker switch unit is connected to input C of the DCX, this is a mono signal (L+R) (used for my Subwoofer)

The speakerswitch is a Presonus Central Station Plus:

The main monitors are Event 20/30 and have balanced XLR input:

The subwoofer is a Adam Sub10 MK2 and also has balanced XLR input:

So i have read the datasheets, i can't find any clue wich input and output voltages to choose.

Best regards,

Bastiaan

Indeed there isn’t any useful information in the datasheets regarding this issue.

You can make some measurements:

Feed a 0dBFS sine wave test tone into the Presonus’ digital input, and measure the voltage at the speaker outputs. I see that it could be adjusted, so set them to a level you might usually set them.

Feed a 400Hz analog sine wave signal into the active speakers’ input and vary the amplitude. Measure the voltage at the speaker inputs when you reach a volume that might be the loudest you’ll possibly play through them. Do this test with caution, don’t play the test tone for too long to avoid damaging the speakers (and your hearing).

With those ballpark figures, you could then deduce what might be the optimal input and output gain on the κDCX.
