Beta22 driving speakers

Postby whomper » January 26th, 2019, 10:13 am

Hi,

I have a balanced Beta22 that I used with both headphones and bookshelf speakers while PSU is a double σ22 with two 100VA transformers.

As I'll be looking to upgrade my speakers with a better pair, one that sensitivity of 84db and a nominal impedance of 8 Ohm, I'm not sure that I have the amp configured to drive them.

Will increasing quiescent current to 250, increasing height of heatsinks from 1.5 to 2 or 2.5, will increase power delivered to speakers? Anything else I can consider?

Bigger heatsinks will help to avoid undue failure of MOSFETs, but it won’t increase the output power.

Nothing will cause the amp to make more power except to increase the supply rail voltages (which, at ±30V, is already near the maximum for this amp), or lower the load impedance (not possible with a set pair of speakers). Even if these are possible, they would make the MOSFETs run hotter.

Increasing the output stage bias won’t increase the power output. It will only move the transition point from class A to class AB higher, at the expense of more heat on the MOSFETs from idle up to the transition point.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I'll connect the speakers and find out how they match ;-)
