Balanced Alpha10 (α10) Build Log

Maybe it was just a soldering issue originally. Put everything back together and test...

EDIT: I see you did that and it’s working. So it must have been a soldering issue.

Let it run for 24 hours or so, rechecked the bias and offset on all four ɑ20 boards, and it seemed to be working pretty well, so I moved on to plugging in an input and output.

There was a weird ground hum when I first hooked it up to the β22 (using the unbalanced outputs) regardless of which output was selected. I switched RCA cables and it went away, so it must have been cable related.

It sounds good! And it's working well! I think I'll leave it on the desktop in use for a couple days before I take out the B&K Reference 50 and replace it with this, but I'm very hopeful based on what I've seen so far.

Part of me is second-guessing my 6-in, 2-out arrangement and wishing I had done 5-in 3-out instead since I also have a Bottlehead Crack that I might want to use sometimes, but that feeling will go away once I have it installed and running full-time.

Tonight, one week from the first post in this thread, I put the balanced ɑ10 and the β22 into my rack

The last things I can think of to fix right now are the tape around the LCD display, and maybe the size of the knob on the ɑ10; it looks kinda puny next to the β22. Anyway, I'm a pretty happy camper. :)

Excellent job! Out of all the DIY projects that I have completed, the balanced ɑ10 is the one that I enjoyed building and enjoy using the most. You will love it.

Someone contacted me to get my FPD files for this build, so I figure I should add them here as well for future reference, if anyone else is interested.

There are four files:
1) Balanced α10 in a 12x12x4 chassis with separate power supply (Front) - alpha10_front_export_balanced.fpd
2) Balanced α10 in a 12x12x4 chassis with separate power supply (Rear) - alpha10_rear_export_balanced.fpd
3) Balanced α10 in a 16x12x4 chassis shared with power supply (Front) - alpha10_front_export_balanced_16inch.fpd
4) Balanced α10 in a 16x12x4 chassis shared with power supply (Rear) - alpha10_rear_export_balanced_16inch.fpd

For my build, I used (3) and (4).

There is a File Uploads subforum where you should put these.
