α10 build thread and questions

Postby itsikhefez » January 19th, 2020, 9:02 pm

Hi!

I am going to build an α10 and will use this thread for posting my progress and ask questions along the way.
This project will likely take a while as the queue is quite full, as of right now I am acquiring the relevant parts.

Some initial questions:
1) σ22 board C5 and C6 - There are some 2200uF 35V low ESR caps that fit the height requirement (ex. UCC KYB). Any advantage to using those over the Panasonic FC 1500uF 35V?
2) For δ1 I chose RN60C/D/E resistors. Theoretically, is there any sonic advantage to spend big on TX2575 bulk foil resistors? If yes, are some resistors more likely to impact than others (ex. RS vs RP) ?

Thanks in advance for this wonderful project and your help.

1) It's up to you. There is no significant difference between 1500uF and 2200uF, The Panasonic FC, FM, Nichicon PW, HE and UCC KYB are all very good choices.
2) I am happy with the Vishay-Dale RN60 series. They are more than good enough. The foil resistors are ultra expensive and have even tighter tolerances, but aside from bragging rights I doubt that you'll be able to tell a difference.

Slightly OT... I am also considering building the gamma3 at some point in the future, which also supports volume control.
If my source was a network streamer -> gamma3, would there be any sonic difference if I controlled volume digitally on the gamma3, or output the full signal to a10 and control volume there?

Theoretically it’s better to control the volume in the analog domain (using α10) than digitally (with γ3), but in practice I don’t think you’ll hear a difference. The software-controlled volume implementation in the WM8741 DAC chip is very good.

I have started the build with the σ10 PSU.
Based on my understanding of the wiring diagram, T2 is "always on" as the primaries are connected to L/N without a switch.
T1 has one primary wire to neutral terminal, and the other to the 2/T1 terminal on the SSR.
The 1/L1 terminal on the SSR is connected to the L terminal on the IEC.

Based on this, I was expecting that T1 would be disconnected until the SSR input DC input is triggered.
Although, I measure about 17VAC on one side of the secondary winding without any DC trigger.
When I triggered the SSR with a 9V battery the voltage went up a bit to 19VAC.
Is this expected?

Yes, the SSR will appear to leak voltage when there is no load.
