Parts list

The table below illustrates the parts needed to populate the γ3 backplane board, the power supply components, the enclosures, their associated panel components and wiring. The list does not include the parts needed to populate the γ24, α24, LCDuino-1, ζ1, ε31, σ22 or σ11 boards. Please see the websites of each of those modules for parts information, as well as the special notes below.

Some parts listed are the ones used on AMB's reference build, but you may choose others to your liking (e.g., LED, switch, knob, etc.).

Notes

  1. These depend on the input and output configuration. See the Digital input and output configuration section below for details.
  2. This is the preferred, high performance option.
  3. Break into 24Px3, 8Px2 and 3Px2 pieces for use as the γ24 and α24 module connectors.

Parts sources

Apart from those items offered at AMB audio shop, you can obtain everything else from the vendors listed on the AMB Audio DIY Page. The recommended US vendors are Mouser and Digi-Key. Builders in other countries may search Farnell or RS Components.

Digital input and output configuration

Digital inputs 1-4 and digital output 2 can be configured at build time to be one of these types:

Note: JP11 is for experimental use only, leave it vacant in all configurations.

Enclosures & panels

AMB's reference γ3 is housed in a Par-Metal 20-12122N enclosure in natural brushed aluminum finish. The size is 12"x12"x2" (WxDxH). The same enclosure model is also used for the power supply chassis. They were ordered with two front panel frames and no panels. Custom 4mm milled aluminum panels were then ordered from Front Panel Express. All screws on the Par-Metal enclosures have #6-32 threads, and stainless socket cap screws were used throughout (standard head on the front/rear panels, button head elsewhere).

Note: Some Par-Metal enclosures have #8-32 threads on the panel frames.

If you would like to replicate AMB's reference build, you should download and install the Front Panel Designer software (for Linux, Mac OS X and Windows), and download the following γ3 FPD files (ZIP compressed bundle, 4KB): gamma3_panels.zip These FPD files were created for perfect alignment with the γ3 backplane board. Be sure to read the README.txt file in the ZIP bundle. All holes and cutouts pertain to the panel parts selections listed in the table above. If you use different parts then the design should be modified to match. Be sure to double-check all measurements before submitting an order to Front Panel Express.

AMB's reference γ3 has the following configuration:
  • Digital input 0: USB (not changeable)
  • Digital input 1: AES/EBU (XLR)
  • Digital input 2: Coaxial (BNC)
  • Digital input 3: Coaxial (RCA)
  • Digital input 4: Optical (Toslink)
  • Digital output 1: Optical (Toslink) (not changeable)
  • Digital output 2: Coaxial (BNC)
The digital inputs 1-4 and output 2 types are configurable at build time. See the Digital input and output configuration section above for details. If you are building a different configuration than the above list, then you will need to change the rear panel design accordingly.

Note that this is an "exported" version of the FPD files, and does not have the AMB logo or the "AMB Laboratories" text. If you want a logo, please create your own.

In order to fit everything into the low-profile 2" Par-Metal enclosure, pay special attention to the following:
  • The σ22 and σ11 heatsinks must be no taller than 1". Use Aavid-Thermalloy 531002B00000G (Mouser 532-531002B00, Digi-Key HS231-ND) or Aavid-Thermalloy 513002B02500G (Mouser 532-513002B25G, Digi-Key HS403-ND).
  • The σ22 and σ11 C5 and C6 capacitors must be no taller than 1". Use 2200µF 35V Nichicon UHE1V222MHD6 (Mouser 647-UHE1V222MHD6, Digi-Key 493-1597-ND), Panasonic EEU-FC1V222S (Mouser 667-EEU-FC1V222S, Digi-Key P11243-ND), or similar.
  • The Par-Metal panel frames need to be trimmed to clear the LCD display on the front, and to clear the backplane board and connectors at the rear. You may use a combination of nibbling tool and flat file to do so. See the Instructions section for more details.
  • Use board standoffs and pin headers/receptacles exactly as specified in the parts list above. The use of standoffs are shown in the table below:

    Using the correct parts will ensure the following:

    • Proper fitment in the enclosure.
    • All pin headers and receptacles are mated securely and completely.
    • Proper fitment of the ε31 bridge board, if used.

Additional per-module notes

The following is a list of per-module notes about parts. Please read through this carefully before you order any parts. Please see the Instructions section for details about building the γ3 DAC.

γ24 high performance DAC core

Build the γ24 as documented at its website. No changes are necessary.

α24 fully-differential line stage

Build the α24 in the "voltage DAC output stage" configuration, and use board connector option 5 (pin headers/receptacles).

LCDuino-1 display I/O processor

SW, POT and SSR in the γ3 parts list above are redundant in the LCDuino-1 parts list. Populate all parts in the LCDuino-1 parts list, except R4, J7, J8, X2, Cs, U2 and its socket. Also, you need to add pin headers to the rear of the LCDuino-1 board, at the _D2/_D3/_D4, _D5/_D6, and _D10/_D11/_D12 locations. See the LCDuino-1 parts list.

ζ1 Audio Widget USB-I²S module

Add pin receptacles to the bottom of the ζ1 module as documented at its website.

If your ζ1 has firmware version older than 20150826, and you want to be able to use a mobile device as a USB source (i.e., smartphone or tablet) without the need for a powered USB hub, then you should update the firmware. See the "firmware" section at the ζ1 website for details.

ε31 bridge board (optional)

The ε31 can be used when you have the same enclosure, LCD screen location, backplane board mounting location and standoff height as AMB's reference γ3. If you use the ε31, several backplane board and LCDuino-1 board connector types must be changed. See the ε31 documentation for details.

σ22 regulated power supply

Configure the σ22 for ±10V DC output. See notes above about the height restrictions for C5, C6 and the heatsinks when used in a 2" tall low-profile enclosure.

σ11 regulated power supply

Configure the σ11 for 5V DC output. See notes above about the height restrictions for C5 and the heatsinks when used in a 2" tall low-profile enclosure.
