The γ24 high performance DAC core

History & acknowledgements

The γ24 was developed as part of the γ3 high resolution DAC project. Due to an effort to further modularize the design, the core portion of the DAC became a separate board now known as γ24. Please see the History section at the γ3 website, as well as the develpment threads at AMB DIY audio forum for details (γ3 thread, γ24 thread).

Separating the γ24 from the γ3 provided important advantages, not only could the γ3 DAC use the γ24 as its core, some adventurous DIYers may base their DAC design on the γ24, which is now a proven performer and takes much of the guesswork out of the design. Also, it allows for future upgrades. A possible pin-compatible variant of γ24 could be swapped in without changing the main board.

While the architecture of using the SRC4392 and dual WM8741s was my idea, the details of γ24 development owes much to the discussions and input from members of the AMB DIY audio forum. As a result the γ24 is a one-of-a-kind DIY DAC core where every detail was vetted by the public. The test bench measurements certainly bears this out. Not only are the γ3 DAC's standard performance metrics beyond reproach, each and every clock signal were checked for waveform shape and signal integrity.

γ24 was released in late November 2015, at the same time as the launch of the γ3 DAC.

I want to thank everyone who helped make this project a reality. Including everyone who contributed in the forums, members of the prototype team, and MisterX for working with me on past DAC projects which became valuable learning experiences.

Look forward to more exciting projects from AMB!
