switching between outputs

Postby lgulyas » January 14th, 2011, 7:39 am

Hi,

Is there a way to switch between outputs? I mean if I plug in my headphone than mute my speaker output.

Thanks!

A related question, is there a problem with having multiple outputs plugged in at the same time?

I'd like to know this too.
My pre-amp does this, as soon as I plug in a set of headphones the main outputs are muted. The only problem is the headphone output on my pre-amp is atrocious, so instead I have to split the main output to both an external headphone amp and my main amps. Then when I want to switch to headphones I have to manually turn off my amps.

The ideal solution (for me) would be to build a beta22, and have the loop output of the beta22 feed my main amps. Then I would have a circuit in the beta22 that would mute the loop output when ever a headphone is plugged in.

Maybe i can put a switch on the front panel to break the circuit between the plug and the board (because i am not using a pcb mounted rca plug). Not so elegent but maybe this will do the trick.

You can get switching TRS jacks, so it'll (for example) play out through the speakers in the back until you plug a headphone in through the front. Otherwise, you can just have a switch, so you have 1 or more outputs that you plug in, and you select which of them gets the output based on the switch.

I plan on doing this with a LCD-unio eventually.

As far as having multiple outputs running at once, one major problem you'll have is that they'll be different loudnesses (unless you have two of the same model headphone). There are ways of circumventing this, though. (I think you can just use another potentiometer)

Here is an example of a switching-type jack.

It is also possible to use dual sound devices so you can mute the other while the other still works. It is used in some studios by Disk Jockeys in which the first device is for the speakers and the other is for the headphones. What I don’t know is the thing they called parallel connecting.

I think in those setups they use a different amp for the headphones vs. the speakers, though I have not heard of this before, so it might be something else.
