Not getting any sound

Postby Boinger » March 10th, 2012, 7:09 pm

So I have wired up my d1 / d2 setup as shown on the website but im not getting any sound.

I did a continuity check when i have say input 3 selected from the input port on the d2 to the input bus going to the d1 and I am not getting continouity. This is happening for all the ports I select. What could be the problem?

Little more information it seems the relays arent switching, Could it be my chip is bad ? It reads pcf8574ap. None of the relays are switching at all could the relays have gone bad in one of my accidents?

did you reset to factory settings (press config button at power up and say 'yes' (press again) to init) ?

are you sure the i2c addresses match? you should hear relays making noise as you vary the volume. its easier to debug the volume first and then the d2. are you getting either d1 or d2 to make ANY relays change state?

even if the relays are 'bad' (which I doubt) you'd see the led's flashing. do you see them change at all? the change will be brief (milliseconds) with only the very end segment staying on. but if you look, you should see the leds blink very briefly. if you cant' see that, you are not talking to the relay board. the i2c addresses may be wrong or maybe the chip series (A vs non-A) means you have to change the factory default addr's in the LCD gui. the A and non-A chips have different base addr's. if those don't match (the chip and the eeprom/gui setting) than you won't see lights flash.

check the i2c cable and be sure that clock is clock and data is data. hopefully also gnd and 5v are right.

volume is fully working, both boards....

I can hear noises when i switch inputs etc. but not for all of them.

oh and yes i can see activity on all the dif bargraph led's

checked the cable as well it is wired correctly.

as far as I can tell I think I have set the addresses correctly.

I think I did connect the lcdduino to the d1 board before setting the options is that bad?

also I am using this pcf chip

http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDet ... PCF8574APN

is that an A type or non A type?

Product says ap but then it says pcf8574 logic family at the bottom.

The part number is PCF8574APN, so it's an "A" type.

in that case the addresses are correct. Should I try factory reseting it or will it not make a difference?

if you view the i2c addr's in the lcd gui, then resetting won't do anything other than set them again.

be sure you have the gui screen right for the NUMBER of d1 and d2 cards installed. are you using 2 d1 and 2 d2 ?

what happens if you swap the PCF chips from the working board to the non-working one?

I will try that and get back to you
can I test the volume by connecting the input directly to the d1 and connecting the output directly to that should work right ?

yes, you can disable the d2 in the menus and just isolate the d1. it has regular input and output pins that should be easy to just test in isolation.

Ok I think the boards are actually ok but im not really sure whats going on here are the symptoms...

Turns out my lack of sound was due to bad wiring. I resolved that and here is whats happening now.

I sometimes get sound on the left channel sometimes get it on the right channel it varries never consistent.

When I turn the volume up it doesnt really get loud or even audible... and the last few steps it suddenly gets really loud.

Also the IR sensor sometimes works sometimes it doesnt work.

I think this could be caused due to lack of enough power?

I am using this psu
http://www.twistedpearaudio.com/power/lcdps.aspx
With the reccomended toiroidal.
