CKKIII Ground Channel Saturation

Postby mewrei » October 31st, 2010, 8:53 pm

Ok, already back with another problem :)

I had a massive humming issue in my amp, originally I placed this on the fault of the transformer but as it turns out, this was contributing significantly less than originally anticipated. The source, as it turns out, was that I had the amp plugged into a power strip. If I take the amp across the room to a plug with nothing else plugged in, the thing is very dang near silent.

I got to reading the wiring guide on the CKKIII and I noticed it mentioned a ground loop breaker in the event that the source and the amp are on the same ground channel. Would the ground loop breaker be a good fix for this ground channel separation issue or am I better off running a long extension cable?

First, there is no "ground channel" (as the term is normally used) on this amp.

Is your power strip properly grounded (i.e., the "ground" prong on its AC cord is connected to the ground socket on all the outlets)?
Is the wall outlet that you plugged this power strip into properly grounded (i.e., the ground socket is actually wired). If the house is old, it might not be.

At any rate, a ground loop breaker might help mitigate the problem.

The ground on the power strip should be properly grounded as is the power plug, the house isn't too tremendously old. If I move across the room and directly couple into a bare plug, all the noise issues disappear.

The unit is on a power strip with a bunch of other electronics as well and I'm wondering if that's causing the problem.

Try a different (brand) power strip and see if it makes any difference. Also try plugging that power strip into a different wall outlet than the one you were using.

Is there a Cable (TV) feed connected to that bunch of other electronics?

Nah just a couple monitors and a few devices with power inverters inside. Moving to a different power strip did fix the issue though. Need to trash the current one.

Thanks guys
