Can it survive a short?

Postby bloodfromastone » June 14th, 2012, 1:16 am

If a headphone plug is not fully plugged in to a set of alpha-20 amplifiers, possibly shorting one channel for a few seconds, while I figure out what I did, is it likely to die in a puff of blue smoke, or will the output transistors just get hot?

It should be ok, but I would advise turning down the volume to minimum first before plugging/unplugging the headphones. It's just good habit to have for any amp.

I try to. I have a habit of accidentally tugging the cable when I don't intend to, in the case of short cables, and I sometimes have trouble getting angled connectors to finally latch in. Since some discrete designs have been known to be prone to dying from such situations, the output transistor is right on the output pin, and no mention is made in the main site, I wanted to check.

There are 2.2 ohm resistors in series with the output transistors which will help protect a short to ground.
