analog or digital?

I've been using the behringer deq2496 for the last year and its pretty good. there is also the minidsp that a lot of people like (I may try one eventually).

the deq2496 is spdif in and spdif out and is pure numerical/digital all the way. I think it has analog ins and outs too (lol) but I never once used them as my system is setup to be all digital until the final DAC stage(s).

for $300 (deq2496 street price), it would be nearly impossible for any diyer (or other vendor, for that matter) to out-do that for THAT price and feature set.

I like having the ability to do really fine eq, but for $300 the make-vs-buy decision was a 'buy' for me hands-down.

...so, the project is not an EQ ;)

I agree :)
Love my deq2496, it's nice having a 31 band graphic and 10 band parametric for the L and R channels independently, with full digital in/out, external mic and auto-EQ. Not to mention midi ports for remote control.

Digital is good. Thanks for the heads up on the deq2496, I'll have too look into it. It's actually well under 300 at some places, 267 at amazon

edit: any comments on overheating? Several amazon comments mention problems due to PSU and DSP chips getting too hot.

Nothing like that with mine. I've had it for...about 6 years now, used daily on my main system (TV, blu ray, music, etc). The worst it's done is take a little longer to turn on sometimes (maybe 30 seconds instead of the typical 5 seconds). Seems to be intermittent, and with it's age I don't really blame it. If it ever kicks the bucket, I'll just buy a new one.
