Gilor's M³

This neat M³, built by Gilor of France, is a combination of source selector and headphone amplifier with a bypass function. Three sets of inputs are selectable via pushbuttons on the front panel, and the is done with relays on a separate logic board. When the M³'s power is turned off, the connected sources are available to the speakers amplifier.

Everything is housed in a Hifi-2000 GX243 enclosure with the optional 10mm thick front panel. The top is a custom perforated metal cover to provide ample cooling. The heatsinks have to be trimmed 5mm in order to clear the top cover, and are attached to the MOSFETs with special clips. This M³ uses OPA627 opamps, Rubycon, Elna Silmic II, Wima and Vishay-BC capacitors. The power supply board was custom designed by Gilor because the STEPS will not fit in the enclosure. The IEC power entry module includes a power line filter.

Gilor documented the entire design and build process of this amplifier in this homecinema-fr.com forum thread.

M³ by NeilR

This M³ by NeilR features two sets of RCA input jacks, selectable by a DPDT toggle switch. It also has two Neutrik locking headphone jacks for concurrent enjoyment by two persons. The M³ board features Panasonic ECQP and Vishay-BC film capacitors, Nichicon PW electrolytic capacitors, Vishay-Dale RN55 resistors, and Alps RK27 potentiometers. The opamps are AD8610 (although OPA627/637 have also been tried). The enclosure is a Hammond 1455T2202BK. NeilR uses an outboard STEPS power supply for his M³.

M³ by I-feng Lin

This M³ amplifier and a companion STEPS power supply were built by I-feng Lin of Taiwan. Both are housed in attractive stainless steel enclosures. The amplifier also features a modified Linkwitz crossfeed circuit built on a board from Tangent, and an AMB ε12 muting/protect circuit. I-feng used Vishay-Sprague Orange Drop, Wima MKP2 and ERO film capacitors, Nichicon Muse electrolytic capacitors, Tocos/Tokyo Cosmos potentiometers, and AD8610 opamps for this M³.

A balanced M³ by bdb

This balanced M³ amplifier, built by bdb, employs two M³ boards (see Other options for more information). Each board is powered by a separate STEPS PSU located in a separate case. The amplifier is housed in a Par-Metal 20 series black anodized aluminum case, while the power supply lives in a case sourced from Jameco. Two ε12 muting/delay circuits are also used to provide headphone protection. This M³ features OPA627AP opamps, Nichicon Muse KZ electrolytic capacitors, and two stereo stepped attenuators from diyfidelity.com.au.

Ferrari's M³

This beautiful M³ is built by Ferrari of the Netherlands. The enclosure is a Hifi-2000 GX383 with the optional 10mm thick front panel. The power supply is a 30V STEPS with Nichicon Muse KZ electrolytics, housed in a small simple metal case within the main enclosure. All electrolytics capacitors on the M³ are Rubycon Black Gate, polystyrene caps for Cbb and C6, and all other bypass caps are MKC. The volume pot is an Alps RK40 Black Beauty, and the opamps are OPA627AP/OPA637AP. An ε12 muting delay circuit provides protection for the headphones.

M³ by David Wei

David Wei of Taiwan built this M³ using a hifidiy.net case. The total power supply rail capacitance is a whopping 28200µF, which necessitated a LM338-based regulator with soft-start. The regulator is mounted on a large heatsink. Wima Black Box film capacitors and 3W metal oxide power output resistors (matched to within 1%) were used. David originally planned to build this as a headphone/speaker dual purpose amplifier but was unable to fit speaker binding posts in the case.
